Minister Comments on Mackworth’s Global Success

A global audience awaits UK sling and hoist specialist Mackworth Healthcare Ltd in 2014 and beyond as the company looks to maximise on a significant rise in export activity.

Led by Directors Neil Smith & Lee Reeves, who succeeded Mackworth’s late founder in late 2012, the step-change comes after a specialist test rig to develop Mackworth’s newest range was created earlier this year with support from the Welsh Government.

A Welsh Government Innovation Voucher for thousands of pounds, awarded in early 2013 has since been succeeded by an incredible increase in turnover and the creation of 22 new positions in 12 months. A further eight to 10 vacancies are also set to follow next year, thanks to a substantial order book for both UK and export markets in 2014.

Visits to Germany’s ‘Medica’ trade exhibition later this month (November) Dubai’s “Arab Health Conference” next January therefore come at the end of a ‘tremendous’ year for Mackworth, not only in its core UK market but further afield too, bosses say.

Mr Smith said: “2013 has been a tremendous year for Mackworth Healthcare Ltd thanks to the investments we have made in new technologies as part of our wider, ongoing R&D strategy.

“Without the Welsh Government funding we simply could not have considered the financial risks involved in developing our latest moving and handling ranges, but now we are looking at a lot more export that we ever have before and 2014 is looking really good for growth.”

Neil continued: “By the end of this financial year, the business will be approaching a five times increase in turnover since acquisition last November, with almost ten per cent of that current turnover represented by our export statistics as of today.

“We also expect this export percentage to increase a further 20% by this time next year, however, and most importantly, we are hoping for a rise in headcount of up to 40 staff at the Mackworth Healthcare Ltd headquarters in Bridgend.”

Neil continued: “The Welsh Government system and availability of these grants has most definitely assisted us during recent, tough, economic times and above all helped us ensure the legacy that our company founder left behind continues to go from strength to strength.”

The Welsh manufacturer plans to showcase its exciting new market offering, alongside existing moving and handling ranges, in both Germany and Dubai after trading partnerships in the Europe and much further afield led to the increase in turnover.

The launch of a new ‘Forest’ sling range, which offers care providers improved traceability when monitoring sling use in line with current legislation through manufacturing techniques unique to Mackworth, has also been accompanied by additional interest from Australia and China in 2013.

The Innovation Voucher provided by Welsh Government towards the test rig’s creation has also been succeeded by a Manufacturer of the Year Award from Bridgend County Borough Council, as well as a special visit to Mackworth’s premises from the Minister for Economy, Edwina Hart AM.

The Minister said: “It is very reassuring to see an independent Welsh business like Mackworth Healthcare making waves in the international market and securing the future of our workforce through the creation of an increasingly healthy order book.

“Having supported the creation of new and emerging technologies across Wales, companies like Mackworth are proof that ongoing work from the Welsh Government’s Business Innovation Programme to improve the export potential of businesses in Wales continues to have significant impact at ground level.”
