Hoist Selection Guide

Mobile Hoist Selection Guidance

Mobile hoists often offer great flexibility of usage within multiple care or home environments. Please note however that these products are not necessarily designed to be used over extensive distances. Also, the carer must usually be fully able bodied, have sufficient training and have enough strength to facilitate appropriate supervision.

When reviewing which mobile product is deemed the most suitable for a patient, then one must apply sufficient thought in which environment it is to be used. For guidance, then please refer to the hoist manufacturer or local Occupational Therapist / Physiotherapist, where the best advice can be provided.

Consideration should be given as to whether the legs of the hoist will move correctly into the right position and indeed whether or not they can approach a bed, chair or other furniture appropriately and without danger to the patient or carer.

Hoist dimensions, sizes and weight consideration, versus patient demographics are very important. Other than manufacturers guidelines, Clinicians advice, LOLER compliance and MHRA guidance can be considered when selecting an appropriate product.

In addition, further thought should be given in relation to the floor surface of which the product will be used upon (e.g. thick carpet or wooden floor for example). Castor size, depth and ease of movement are also important considerations with hoist design.

Storage of the hoist when not in use is equally important. Therefore size, ability to transport, and in some instances collapsibility are key features (where appropriate to the surrounds). A charging point must be compliant for the appropriate country voltage. Also, please check charging capacity and battery life before use. An emergency lowering facility is essential, should a hoist be at the end of a battery charge or life.

Stand Assist Products

Although all of the above guidance is to be considered for general mobile hoists, in addition there are many stand assist products available on the market. These items are generally designed for a patient who is able to “weight bear” in some capacity (usually for short periods). Alternatively, this could be used as part of a general re-habilitation package or to build / aid patient confidence.

When transferring between multiple environments for short distances, then this product is most suitable. A few examples of this could be toilet usage or simply transferring from a chair into a bed or other support surface.

As with all moving and handling processes, a qualified clinician or trained carer should be present in all instances.
