Export Success – November 2014

As Export Week gets underway, Mackworth are celebrating winning its first export orders from Australia and Spain.

Mackworth Healthcare, who since acquisition had already commenced aggressive export activity to countries such as Ireland, Italy, France and USA, recently had some large orders from its latest round of export success in new countries Australia and Spain. This success was co-ordinated primarily with its overseas partners in Australia.

As a result of these sales the company – which was only acquired by MD Neil Smith and Director / General Manager Lee Reeves in November 2012 – Mackworth has seen exports increase from 5% of turnover to that of 25%.

Announcing the news at an event during Export Week, Lee said “It is very unusual to achieve initial orders like this but having inspected our facilities, we thankfully left a positive picture of what our British manufacturing capabilities truly are. In honesty, we are absolutely delighted with this progress. Australia, albeit a smaller population, versus a large geographic area is a huge emerging market for us and with great potential due to its new and wealthy status. It’s one we really wanted to crack this year, so its great news as our very own products are now physically “en- route” to Australia.”

Lee continued at the event, “Exports can make a huge difference to the success of your business and we now plan to launch an aggressive export campaign in 2015 with the aim of moving more into the likes of USA and Nordic areas, which are leading moving and handling markets.

“Overseas sales can also open up potentially new and larger markets for future projects. I certainly endorse the Welsh Government’s campaign to help and encourage businesses to export and trade internationally. There are obvious challenges to be faced but expert help and advice is available.”

Economy Minister Edwina Hart, who officially opened Mackworth’s new headquarters and manufacturing facility earlier this year, congratulated the company on its export successes.

The Minister said;” This news is very timely as Export Week gets under way and it is a great advertisement of what can be achieved. It illustrates the very real opportunities out there and I hope many more companies will follow their lead.

“Businesses can find out more about trading internationally at the Explore Export event on Friday which provides information on the various global markets, the opportunities they present, as well as the raft of help and support available from the Welsh Government and UKTI.”

Initial contact was made with these companies via relevant investment to overseas trade exhibitions and general relationship networking before and afterwards. Director and General Manager Lee Reeves, who had previously lived in Australia and knew of the companies involved, played a central role and the deal was cemented after the company travelled almost 9,400 miles to Wales in order to inspect Mackworth’s state of the art facilities and capabilities.

Mackworth Healthcare also plans to launch a number of new products later this year which have been developed with Innovation funding support from the Welsh Government.

Since acquiring the business two years ago the company’s profitable turnover will have increased by over 850% at the end of this financial year and staff numbers have risen by 550% at each site. The move to larger, purpose designed premises was supported by £114,000 business finance from the Welsh Government and provides the manufacturing capacity needed to meet the growing demand for their products.
